Q: How long have you been involved in theatre?
For as long as I can remember! That is, if you count ballet recitals and church plays where I would sing Bible songs and try really hard to direct and choreograph the other children. The moment I decided theatre needed to be a constant part of my life was when I saw a production of Hamlet at Dallas Theatre Center when I was 16.
Q: How long have you been involved with Pegasus Theatre?
Other than helping clean your storage area 😉 and being a patron, this is my first show! I’ve supported by laughing uncomfortably loudly at my friends in the black and white murder mysteries.
Q: Any favorite moments with Pegasus that stand out for you?
Probably the part where I was cast. That was pretty good. Ummmmmm and the time Budji [Ben Schroth] substituted the word “spiders” instead of “clowns” in his line. Definitely that.
Q: You’re currently in rehearsals for The Naughty Bits. The press release says it’s developed by The Naughty Bit players. How does that work?
It began with a dream. AKA brainstorming sessions, ideas that were passed around, and people bringing in their own work to form a show. When it came down to decision time for which sketches would be included, we settled that by mud wrestling. Kurt refereed the mud wrestling matches… or sometimes just picked the lineup without the mud wrestling matches.
Q: What do you do when you aren’t working with Pegasus?
Mainly lie on the floor and stare at the ceiling. Oh, wait, that’s just what I did after I got home from tech tonight. I’m very sleepy. I’m a board member at Nouveau 47 Theatre, so we are constantly hosting events of various sizes to support writers in their development process. I produce a lot of readings, salons, and workshops through them, and will be producing their holiday show again this year. Other than that, I volunteer at The Village Church and like to drive around in my car dancing to Lady Gaga at stoplights.
Q: Looking back at all your experiences, who would you say has influenced you the most in your theatrical career?
In terms of career, it’s absolutely my father. He’s a composer, sound engineer, music producer, and musical jack of all trades (or, as he often jokes, “anything for a buck.”) He’s constantly writing, proposing, and managing projects. His tenacity, prolific career and ability to write amazing things on a terrific time crunch has inspired me. He taught me by example that if you want to make a career out of something like this then you have to work hard, be pleasant, and be multi-talented.
In terms of acting technique, I’d say I’m a mixture of Meryl Streep and Martin Short.
Q: What comes next for you?
Next I’m directing a remount of The Legend of Zorba at Pocket Sandwich Theatre, producing N47’s holiday show, directing John Michael Colgin in his next solo show in January, and working on my own solo work (working title is Super Mortal).
