We profiled our Board President, Alan Tompkins, a few months ago, now it’s time to give some attention to our Board Vice-President, the incredibly talented Pam King.
This is actually Pam’s second tour of duty on the Pegasus Theatre board. She originally joined us in the late 1990s and served for several years. I learned so much from her during that time! Like, don’t have a fundraiser if the maximum you can expect to raise is $1500. Useful stuff like that.
In addition to being sharp, warm, open-minded, and candid, Pam is by profession a Communications Specialist. Over the years she has served a number of clients, who have this to say about her work:
- “Pam King is quite simply my “Go To” copywriter and editor.”– Doug Williamson, Director of Business Development
- “Ms. King has taken the Museum’s marketing to the next level.” – Sr. Cpl. Rick Janich, Dallas Police Museum
- “Pam’s writing style really brings the subject to life and keeps our reader’s attention.” – Max Miller, CEO Miller Media Holdings
Pam has applied her skills to a number of impressive positions over her career, including but not limited to:
- Mayor of the town of Double Oak, Texas
- Executive Director of the Dallas Coalition for the Arts
- Public Relations Account Executive at Carol Reed & Associates
- MarComm Account Executive at Verve Communications
- Running her own independent communications consulting business for 10 years
- Her current position as Grants Manager at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens
But it really isn’t surprising when you consider the fact that she made the Dean’s List at Case Western Reserve when earning her degree in English and Political Science! She was bound for glory, one way or another. We are very grateful she has chosen to share her talents with us!
In general, a non-profit board member has ten basic duties:
- Determine mission and purpose.
- Select the chief executive.
- Support and evaluate the chief executive.
- Ensure effective planning.
- Monitor and strengthen programs and services.
- Ensure adequate financial resources.
- Protect assets and provide proper financial oversight.
- Build a competent board.
- Ensure legal and ethical integrity.
- Enhance the organization’s public standing.
Items 1 and 2 took place before Pam and Alan’s arrival, and both have done a great job at contributing in all other areas! If I had to pick the top 3 areas where we have felt Pam’s influence, I’d pick items 3, 8, and 10.
- “Support and evaluate the chief executive.” Pam’s support for our chief executive (Kurt Kleinmann) has been truly uplifting. By word and by deed, she demonstrates that she is willing to do what is needed to make his job easier.
- “Build a competent board.” Pegasus Theatre is in a phase of rebuilding our board, after several years of having a fairly inactive board of directors. Pam has led the discussion in many board meetings, emphasizing the need to consider what talents we need on the board and being strategic about who we invite to participate.
- “Enhance the organization’s public standing.” Pam doesn’t just talk about this, she takes action. Last year, she picked several nights to join me in the lobby of the Eisemann Center and personally greet audience members and engage them in conversation. She acts as a personal ambassador for Pegasus, constantly introducing new people to the theatre to expand our audience.
So it is with gratitude and admiration that we post this profile! We hope to work with Pam for many years to come.
