Chalkboard from "XSR:DIE!"

Chalkboard from “XSR:DIE!”

But not just any chalkboard! This is the original chalkboard that was built for the first production of XSR:Die! by Kurt Kleinmann in 1987. Yes, this chalkboard has lived with us for over 28 years! First, for 16 years at our original space on Main Street. Then in a rented storage unit for 3-4 years when we took a break from producing. And finally, in our small but efficient storage space that was built specifically for Pegasus Theatre.

You may wonder why we’ve kept this board all these years. After all, we have limited space, and this is a rather large, clunky item. Well, it’s all about balancing risk and reward.

First, we know that we are going to need a chalkboard any time we produce XSR:Die! There is a humorous exchange between Nigel and Harry in that show the depends on a chalkboard, specifically one that is on wheels and can rotate. So the risk that we need a chalkboard exactly like this one is HIGH!

Balance that against what we’d gain by ditching the chalkboard and rebuilding it every time. (Buying is not realistic…do you know how hard it is to find a gray chalkboard?!?) We’d gain a little space, but we’d lose so much more! We know this chalkboard perfectly meets the needs of the show. Will a new one do so? Having this one on hand means the set designer can focus on more interesting elements of the set.

And frankly we’re a bit sentimental. Ok, a LOT sentimental. There’s something calm and reassuring about pulling this old standby out of storage. It’s reliable, does its job without complaints, and is always there when we need it. Much like our returning cast members who share their talent with us each year, it’s a treasured resource we hope to have with us for many years!
